I painted this after a hike across the hills shown here in the artwork. It was a unique experience to explore the scene up close and then paint it from an entirely different angle. In the upper right, you can see a highlight where the sun touches the top of the hill. This is the very spot where I sat and sketched, overlooking the lake. The change in perspective revealed to me how different things can appear when viewed from a distance. When we’re ‘in it,’ the path can feel tough, but looking back, we see the achievement and the beauty in the effort.

I chose to keep this painting impressionistic so that up close, the details appear as abstract marks and textured blobs of paint. But as you step back, the scene of the forest and hills unfolds.
